The 2014 NSATIS Athletics Carnival was held in perfect conditions last Tuesday at the Penguin Athletics Centre. Competitors enjoyed the opportunity to run on the newly resurfaced track and the administrative officials found the new facilities great to work in.
St Patricks College dominated throughout the day winning all 7 shields on offer – Junior Boys, Senior Boys, Aggregate Boys, Junior Girls, Senor Girls, Aggregate Girls and Combined Aggregate. This feat has not been achieved since 2004 when Scotch Oakburn College dominated the competition. The St Patricks students, staff and coaching officials are to be congratulated on their efforts.
St Patricks College also took home the majority of the Age Group Pennants winners. However, Marist Regional College won the U/14 boys pennant due to a number of outstanding performances from Jack Colgrave, Launceston Church Grammar School won the Open girls pennant and Scotch Oakburn won the U/13 girls and Open boys.
There were four individual record breakers. Ryan Powell set the scene for the track in the opening male event breaking the Open 3000m in a time of 8.57.00. Jamie Summers set a new distance (33.08m) in the U/16 girls javelin – the only field event to be broken all day. Talented Tasmanian athlete from St Patricks College, Getasew Ferguson, smashed the meet record of 4.23.00 set by Robin Dornauf in 1977 in the U/15 boys 1500m with a new time of 4.16.75. This is a commendable effort after already competing in the 3000m and 800m earlier in the day. Jack Colgrave from Marist Regional College stole the limelight setting a total of 3 new track records in the U/14 boys age group. These included the 100m (11.83 sec), the 200m (24.38) and the 90 m hurdles (13.99).
Athletes and coaching staff from all schools are now focusing on the State Athletics Carnival which will be held in Hobart on Saturday 18th October.
