In what can only be described as trying weather conditions the SSATIS Athletics Carnival was run at the Domain Athletics Centre on Tuesday 22 September. With a forecast high of only 10 degrees and showers it was touch and go as to whether the event would proceed but the decision was made to persevere and it proved worthwhile.
Four records were broken throughout the day. Biniyam Hagos from GYC smashed the Boys Open 3000m event by 15 seconds to record a time of 9.13.28. Jack Hale from GYC broke Troy Bennett’s longstanding Boys Open Long Jump record of 6.70m set in 1986 with a jump of 7.38m. Ebony Webb from Calvin Christian School ran a very strong 1500m race in the Girls Under 15 event to post a new record of 4.52.51. Oliver Burrows-Cheng from the Hutchins school ran the Boys Under 14 Hurdles in 13.80 seconds, a fantastic effort given the windy and cold conditions on the day.
Many thanks must be extended to all competing schools for their resilience and willingness to participate and compete admirably despite the harsh weather conditions.
The day would not have been possible without the tireless work of Athletics South Officials and Brian Roe from Athletics Tasmania.
Thanks must also go to the organising schools – Hutchins, Collegiate, Sacred Heart, MacKillop Catholic College, Calvin Christian School and Guilford Young College. Without all of these people working together to ensure all facets of organisation were covered the event would not be possible.
An extra special thanks to Terry Moore and Nick Lahey for their commentary on the day. Their knowledge of the events and athletes and enthusiasm over the microphone helped make the atmosphere a lot more enjoyable and lively.
We now look forward to the SATIS (State) Athletics Carnival at St Leonard’s in Launceston on Saturday 17 October 2015.
